Parker Cemetery
Friendly, Tyler County, West Virginia, USA
"The Parker Cemetery was located south of Friendly about 1/4 mile on the property now owned by the Chemical Leaman Trucking Company. This cemetery was destroyed by a local farmer before WWII. It is remembered by local residents as having about 40 stones in it.
Tradition has it this was the oldest cemetery in this part of the county. We discovered the identities of some through military records. The rest came from the files of Mabel Williamson, a well known genealogical researcher from the 1920's-30's-40's. She had visited the cemetery in search of her own family members and that is all we have any record of. Her records show this is where a number of the first settlers were buried."
- from page 71 of a Tyler County Cemetery book in the Tyler County Museum Genealogy Room. (The date this quote was written is not known, but Chemical Leaman Tank Lines, Inc. existed from about 1961 until 1999. Outside that period it existed by different names. )
The stones removed by the farmer were thrown into the river, with none remaining to mark the cemetery. Somehow, the original headstone for Andrew C. Hays was saved and now rests in the Friendly Cemetery.
As of January 2020 the aforementioned Chemical Leaman no longer exists, having gone through acquisition, etc. A trucking company is operating from the same location: Dana Transport, Route 2 North, Friendly, WV 26146. GPS Location Lat 39° 30' 42.12" N, Lon 81° 3' 57.68" W.
Of the estimated 40 burials in the cemetery there are only 10 individuals identified. Of those 10, the 6 listed below are commemorated with stone memorials in the Friendly Cemetery. All 6 have virtual Find a Grave memorials in both the Parker and Friendly cemeteries to recognize their being interred in the Parker Cemetery and being memorialized with stone markers in the Friendly Cemetery.
