Waters Family Cemetery
Island Creek, Calvert County, Maryland, USA
Sewell Davis Waters resided on a farm in the Mutual area of Calvert County, Maryland. There was a family cemetery on his property that included 4 known gravestones in 1986 when the book, "Old Graveyards, Calvert County, Maryland was published. There possibly were other burials in the family cemetery.
In 1867, Sewell Waters and his second wife, Elizabeth, conveyed to the Trustees of the "Methodist Church and School of the Colored Population", 3 acres of land for a church to be built. The first church was known as "The Meeting House". The old meeting house, which also served as a school, burned and was replaced by simple one story Victorian Gothic structure, which is shown on the MIHP website online. That building eventually was replaced by the current church.
Records indicate that the church was next known as Island Creek Church. In later years, the congregation split and the white parish was known in 1908 as the Waters Memorial Methodist Church. The black parish was originally known as Brooks Chapel. In 1908, it became the Brooks Methodist Church and Parsonage in honor of John I. Brooks, a local pastor and undertaker. According to MIHP, the two churches are about a hundred yards apart and they share a graveyard.
It is believed that the old Waters Family Cemetery is near the two churches.
