Add PhotosNell Sharber, whose grandfather Stephen Joseph Rhyne later owned the land, remembers the graves, thinks they were graves of children but does not remember how many. They were marked by rocks only. There is no road leading to these graves and Nell does not know if it can now be found.
Some say that the community of Pruitt Lake was named for this man. However, the name "Prewitt" as found in the Deed Records is spelled different from the current spelling of the community name, "Pruitt Lake."
According to Deed Records of Cass County, Vol. G, page 532, Anselem Prewitt bought land from James C. Chambers on 22 Aug 1853. On 8 Aug 1912, A. Prewitt and wife, M.E. Prewitt sold land to Dayton Wareham, recorded in Vol. X-3, page 595. Presumably the deaths would have been sometime during that period of time, 1853-1912.
This cemetery is known to be predominately white.
This information was acquired 30 Apr 1995 by Audrey Rankin.
