"Fort Meigs was besieged twice, in May and July 1813, by British troops under General Henry Proctor and Indigenous peoples from numerous tribes led by Tecumseh of the Shawnee. United States regulars, Kentucky Militia, the Pittsburgh Blues, and Virginia Militia were involved in the defense of Fort Meigs.
"There is only one confirmed cemetery on the property, located on the South Lawn outside of the fort, for the Pennsylvania soldiers who died at Fort Meigs. This cemetery is marked by a large monument. There are two other stones within the walls of the fort, one for Major Amos Stoddard, and one for Lt. Robert Walker of Pennsylvania and Lt. John McCollough of Ohio. The location of graves of these men remain unknown. Other cemeteries have been rumored to be on the site's property but archaeological findings have proven those rumors to be false.
"Two monuments on the west lawn outside of the fort honor the Kentucky Militia and Virginia Militia who fought at Fort Meigs. Only the Virginia monument names individuals who died at Fort Meigs or in Ohio in the conflict, with no distinction between the two.
"The death toll of those who perished at Fort Meigs from disease and battle may never be known. During peak population, over 3500 men were serving at Fort Meigs. Unfortunately it is unlikely to ever know all the names of those who died there.
"Fort Meigs Historic Site is a National Historic Landmark and archaeological preserve whose mission is to tell the story of Fort Meigs, the War of 1812, and honor those who forever rest within its hallowed ground."
