Ruby Wooldridge Hamilton, in her 1985 book "The Story of Evergreen, Virginia 1854-1984", includes an 1860s map on page 8 showing the "plantation" of George Thomas Farrar. In a 1988 letter she states that the Davis Cemetery is located on her land near the word "Farrar" on the 1860's map. Her grandparents, John Littleton Davis and Elizabeth Baker Farrar, are both buried in this cemetery.
The cemetery looked at the time like an overgrown oasis in the middle of a pasture. The weeds and bushes were 9 feed tall in places. In addition, there were two large trees in the small enclosure. One of the trees was dead but upright. Even from 5 feet away we didn't recognize that there was a rusting dilapidated iron fence surrounding the plot. As we parted the weeds and got into the enclosure, we could see that all 6 gravestones were tumbled over. To our great surprise and joy, after much difficulty righting the stones, we found the inscriptions were very legible. Getting good photos was hampered by the overgrowth's heavy shadows, the severe angles imposed by the fence and the related positions of the tombstones plus the limitations of 1988 photographic equipment.
I hope during the intervening years that this important cemetery in the genealogical history of several families has been better maintained.
Cemetery info by Dr. Gresham Farrar.
