Battle of Stone Houses Burial Grounds
Windthorst, Archer County, Texas, USA
In November of 1837, ten Texas Rangers and fifty Indians died in a 3-hour battle. Indians eventually set fire to the grass to flush out the Rangers. The surviving Rangers lost their horses but escaped through a ravine and walked all the way back to settlements near present day Dallas. The men that died that day were left to the elements, and never received proper burial. This is a Burial Ground rather than a Cemetery. There are no headstones or flowers, just a Historical Marker erected by the Archer County Historical Survey Committee. The actual fight took place about 1.5 miles west of this marker at the site of three natural stone mounds which appeared to the Indians to be small houses.
