The cemetery was established in 1835 by four Lexington men as the Presbyterian Burying Ground and consisted of the block bounded by N Upper Street, N Limestone Street, W 6th Street, and W 7th Street. In 1843, the cemetery was sold to the First Presbyterian Church and the Second Presbyterian Church and became known as the Waverly Square Cemetery. The city prohibited burials in the cemetery in 1879. The cemetery accepted burials of both blacks and whites. In the 1880s, the churches agreed to sell the cemetery for development. After litigation, the court agreed to the sale with the stipulation that all burials be removed to other locations. In August 1894, the construction of siz houses on the property was begun.
