Dancy Family Graveyard
Orange Mills, Putnam County, Florida, USA
This is a private cemetery located on property owned by John and Nancy Trescott. Parcel #48-09-27-1000-0000-0040. Take 207-A west to Dancy Avenue, turn onto Dancy Avenue and go to the end of the pavement. Cemetery is on the left. Ray Bunton, Jr. may have historical insight on cemetery. He lives between the Trescott property and the river and works for St. Johns River Water Management District.
Col. Francis Littlebury Dancy and his family were among the original pioneer families who settled in the Federal Point--Orange Mills area of Putnam County. Although this old historical cemetery appears to be neglected, it nevertheless is well protected from vandals, etc., by the Trescott and Bunton families, who live nearby. HASTINGS QUAD. N 29o 41.224 W 81o 36.057. (Maintained).
I was able to take photographs earlier this year, 2013. The graveyard consists of a small fenced plot and has one single four-sided pylon or obelisk in it. All of the ‘residents' are listed on this monument.
Col. Dancy is on one side, and the other family members, listed on another. I suspect that this marble monument was placed sometime after Col. Dancy's death, and replaces wooden markers for the other family members.
Col. Dancy's widow, Florida Reid Dancy died in 1894 and is not listed. So I suspect that she is the one who commissioned this marker. However, no survivor added her name to it.
