The mediaeval chapel was dedicated to St. Ronan, or St. Rowan, a bishop said to have been associated with the legendary King Maldwin of the eighth century. The name "Strowan" derives from the name of St. Ronan. The chapel and was in use on alternate Sundays as early as 1600. A ruin now, Strowan Church was once a thatched one-storey building. The east gable and part of the side walls are still standing and several memorial stones built into the walls are visible, though hard to decipher due to the effects of the elements. Several individual graves marked with stone crosses can be seen in the kirkyard. Strowan church united with Monzievaird before 1662. By 1889 the chapel was in ruins and overgrown with ivy.
The pre-1855 inscriptions in "The Monumental Inscriptions of South Perthshire Vol.2" are from from a survey undertaken in July 1972. Many of the post 1855 graves are Graham-Stirlings.
