The pioneer Catholic mission was established by Father Jean Genin about 1870 and was closed in 1882. Most of the graves at the cemetery were later moved to St. Benedict's Cemetery, Wild Rice, North Dakota. The dedication of the pioneer marker at the Mission of Holy Cross Cemetery, took place on September 28, 1929 by the Daughters of the American Revolution, Dacotah Chapter.
