Add PhotosFrom family stories, this cemetery was on the Hoge Family farm. The Hoge family can be traced back to the 1700s in Wise County. Though there are Bruce Family Members in this cemetery, it was really the family burial ground for the Hoge family initially. You can find this cemetery on a wooded hillside behind Clayton Manufactured Homes located at 11416 Norton Coeburn Road, Coeburn, Virginia 24230… [276-395-7272]
When the Hoge Farm was purchased, Wise County did not exist. In 1856, the county was formed from land taken from Lee, Scott, and Russell Counties. It was named after Henry A. Wise, who was the Governor of Virginia at the time.
The area was referred to as Guest River. Now the name of the area is Coeburn. The Town of Coeburn is nestled in the mountains of Southwest Virginia and is situated in the southeastern portion of Wise County, just off Route 58. Originally, the town was named Guest Station after Christopher Gist. When the town was incorporated in 1894, the name was changed to Coeburn in honor of W. W. Coe, Chief Engineer of the N&W Railroad, and Judge W. E. Burns.
The home of Jim & Jesse and Ralph Stanley II, Coeburn is also widely known today for its beautiful downtown, complete with antique lamps, brick sidewalks, and pedestrian bridges. The town spans 1.9 square miles and is home to approximately 2,000 people.
