Roster of South Carolina Patriots in the American Revolution by Bobby Gilmer Moss, page 982:"Wharton, Samuel""He served as a lieutenant and captain before and after the fall of Charleston."It was found that Sanuel Wharton applied for a pension after the Revolutionary War and the dates he was paid were in the years 1824-1826; therefore he was not dead in 1824 as stated on his tombstone. Samuel and Maudeline's first burial place was in the old Frederick Burts graveyard in Laurens, SC. At the head of the graves were two small stones. On one were the letters S. W., and on the other were M. W. There were no dates on the earlier stones. In 1914 under the auspices of the U.S. War Dept., Col. Samuel Wharton's body was exhumed and re-interred in a churchyard in Waterloo, SC. The family at the same time moved the remains of his wife to rest beside Col. Wharton.
