The Emeline Page Cemetery is near the southeast corner of the intersection of Bear Swamp Road and Ashpole Swamp Road. Emeline's granddaughter, Rebecca "Beck" (Rogers) Ford, told me that this was the burial ground of Emeline's parents and others of their family.
Though Ms. Beck didn't remember his name, Emeline's father, as shown in multiple records, was David Page (c1810-1862), one of the sons of Solomon Page. It seems likely this was the burying ground of David Page's family. His first wife, (unknown) Bennett, and others of his family likely lie here.
But David seems to have been the same person as the Private David Page who died in 1862 during the Civil War, who is buried at Oakdale Cemetery in New Hanover County, North Carolina. (See Findagrave # 7173401.)
David's children, all apparently by his first wife, were:
Rebecca Page m. 1/Joseph Jones 2/James Watts
Emeline (never wed)
Rosa/Rosey Ann Page m. William J. Wallace
Jane Page m. Jackson Harrelson
Amanda Page m. William L. Butler
The cemetery is on Emeline's portion of a tract that her grandfather, Solomon Page, gave to her father David for the term of David's life, then to David's children. (Marion County Deed Book N page 79.) It was part of a large tract of land that had belonged to Joshua Barfield, and was sold at Sheriff's Sale to Solomon Page in 1799 (Marion Deed Book E page 146).
After David died his second or third wife and widow, Matilda (unknown) in 1868 brought suit in an attempt to collect money for dower rights in the land. David's children won the case, proving through their grandfather's deed that their father had only a life estate and the land belonged to them, but offered to allow their stepmother to continue to reside on the lands, stating in an Equity pleading, "They refused to allow the widow of David Page to take as distributee of her late husband a dower in the land on which he lived but did not compel her to leave the land, on the contrary they asked her to remain with them on the land as a matter of favor and not of right." (Marion County Equity Court Roll 334.)
Two years later, in 1870, Emeline is shown in the census with real estate valued at $400 and her sister, Rebeccca, with real estate valued at $375. The difference in value could be because Emeline's portion included David's old home. Locals say there was a large old house on the opposite corner of the field from the cemetery. It seems likely that was the old home of David Page and the residence of Emeline.
