Rochelle Cemetery
Georgetown, Grant Parish, Louisiana, USA
Located north of Georgetown to the right of US 165 Contact Michael May
This cemetery was located at the south end of old Rochelle behind the black part
of town. The # of graves has not been counted must be over 100 unmarked graves
Graves can be found because they are lower than than normal.
This Cemetery was abandoned sometime before the 40s when the mill closed and all
the blacks left the north part of grant parish. It badly needs something to mark
the limits of the graveyard and markers placed on the unmarked graves while you
can still tell where they are. If you can help please contact me.
A few graves have caved in. 1 Grave was found marked with a pine knot and someone
has pored cement on the ground covering some of the marked graves.
At one time the loggers drove through this cem when cutting trees 1 large marker made
of bricks was disrupted and the bricks are now unstacked. Its unknown if this brick marker
was a grave marker or something else. Another one just like it has been spotted
in the White cemetery.
The US 156 4 Lane will be very close to this unmarked cemetery and its unclear if
anyone knows it is here because it is not on any USGS government maps.
When walking in on the cemetery the first marker found was of Rev Anderson.
I took photos of these and can not read some of the wording. I will have to retake
This is a large abandoned cemetery with only a few of the graves marked most likely
over 100 are unmarked.
"Rochelle" was a huge company town of sawmill employees and their families.
It provided a home for more than 1,000 persons, most employed by the mill.
During its heyday, it was just as large as Colfax today. Of course, as time passed
and the sawmill closed down, people moved from the area, leaving behind deceased
loved ones in the white and black cemetery's. Most unmarked.
