Some of the taller monuments in the Staats family cemetery can be seen across the Hudson River, on the high hill behind the red roof of the Staats' home.

"Sometime in the early 20th century, the hilltop family cemetery was deeded to the East Greenbush Reformed Church, and that ownership status has not changed. The advantage to the Staats family is that because this is a church cemetery, additional burials can take place. As I understand it, the East Greenbush Reformed Church had transferred its cemetery to a separate foundation, but that was done before the Staats hilltop cemetery was left to that church. In the early 1990s, a representative of the East Greenbush Reformed Church contacted the Staats family to see if we would be interested in taking back possession. We declined on the basis that our cemetery, if it became private, would be subject to separate incorporation, fees, and other restrictions"
