Add PhotosLocation: Using the same location marker as the Nichols Cemetery, one-forth mile northwest are three graves with only inscribed fieldstones as markers. It is near the center of the SE 1/4 of SW 1/4 of Section 36, T7S - R7W, about 300 yards east of the Alexander Motorway. (Co. Rd. 36)
On the Waters visit to the site in the 1960s, the markers were in a wooded area and overgrown with vines and
other vegetation. In some years past, Mr. Jake Alexander had related to his son, Tom Alexander, that this was the graves of a Gray family, a husband. wife and daughter. Mr. Gray had been a blacksmith on the property during his lifetime. With no other data from which to work from, we resorted to the 1850 census. The only Gray family in or near the area is listed below, with age and where born.
Gray, G. T., 32 Ala., and wife, Gray, Mary, 32 Tenn. And five children all born in Alabama - - Francis, age 10: William, age 8: John, age 6: Elizabeth, age 4: Martha, Age 1.
Mr. George Melson, our informant, stated that the fields around this site were still known as the "Gray Fields" when he farmed on the place as a young man. This was recently verified by John Sterling. Recently while passing the area in the 1990s it gave the appearance of having been bulldozed.
