Mizell Cemetery
This cemetery is located in a valley of the southern limitation of Sand Mountain. It is positioned on a small knoll between an old Indian trail (now named Old Baker Gap Road) and an old slow running creek with no name. The knoll is a naturally flat area of only approximately 40 feet wide by 80 feet long, with sloping sides to the trail and creek. Mizell Cemetery still has white oak trees growing on the site that are estimated to be over 150 years old. The geographic location and topographical properties were probably major factors in selecting this site as a graveyard. The cemetery was on private land and was never a major landmark in the community (only 9 known graves). It was abandoned in the early 1940s, to become overgrown and unrecognizable. The cemetery was cleared by the current residents who purchased the property as a building site. They honored the three headstones they found, and now use the cemetery as their yard, erecting a hobby green house, equipment shed and an above-ground swimming pool among the three headstones. The local residences have historical knowledge of this cemetery and maintain that the three current headstones were the only ones known about going back to the early 1920s.
