This is an abandoned cemetery of the OLD church near the railroad tracks in Spencer, Rowan Co., NC. This area is now owned by the NC Synod Evangelical Lutheran Church in Salisbury, NC. There are about 75 graves there but the cemetery has not been kept up. Some of the graves have no markers, some of the monuments are toppled and broken, and some have fallen down a steep embankment. The woods and brush are taking over the cemetery and it is in need of a cleanup and restoration. I have tried for years to get Rowan Co., NC to go in and clear away the brush and maintain the cemetery to no avail.
Directions: Upon entering Spencer, NC heading toward Salisbury, after passing the shopping center, look for Real's Variety Store on the left side of Salisbury Street. Take the road behind the Variety store, Lexington Avenue. The cemetery is on the left about a block and a half from the store right next to the water tower.
Summer 2015 - Recently Dan Williams and the Bishop of the Lutheran Church Synagogue made efforts to clean up the edge of the cemetery and add a plaque recognizing the interments within. It really looks nice and can be seen from the road.
