The McElderry family purchased the land of Chief Chinnabee, who had been a Brigadier General of friendly Creek warriors during the Creek Indian War of 1813-1814. His son, Selocta Fixico, was said by some to have been the one who escaped from the hostile encircled Ft. Lashley and traveled 30 miles to alert General Andrew Jackson at Ft. Strother of the besieged settler's peril. Jackson immediately marched his 2,000 Tennessee Volunteers to that location and engaged the hostile Creek warriors. Approximately 300 Creeks and 17 Tennesseans were slain in the "Battle of Talladega", November 9, 1813. Seventeen settlers with one hundred and twenty friendly Creeks were rescued. Lieutenant Thomas McElderry served in Captain Child's company of the Tennessee Militia. A monument was erected over the grave of Selocta at McElderry Station, intersection of McElderry (County No. 398) and Twin Churches (County No. 47) Roads, by the McElderry family. The McElderry Family cemetery is 100 yds. northwest of their country house on top of the hill, which is visible from the intersection.
Notes for this description were taken from "Historic Tales of Talladega" c. 1993, by E. Grace Jemison, The Gregath Publishing Co.(3rd Printing) and "Fascinating Talladega County", by Randolph F. Blackford, Brannon Printing Co., Talladega, Alabama.
The current landowner lives out-of-state, but a custodian lives on the premises and the driveway to the residence is secured with a locked gate. Spring landscaping is imminent, as well as a general cleaning of the family cemetery, which is enclosed within a cement retaining wall capped with a low wrought iron fence.
