This cemetery should not be confused with the active and much larger Eden Cemetery in Collingdale, Delaware County, Pennsylvania.
Eden Hall Cemetery was established at the Convent of the Sacred Heart in 1847. The Cemetery is located on Convent Lane below Frankford Avenue at Bristol Street, Philadelphia, PA. The chapel and burial ground were part of a convent and school named Eden Hall, which was established by the Society of the Sacred Heart. The property was originally a private estate, and was purchased by the sisters in 1847. Several people have been linked to the site over the years, including Saint John Neumann and two aunts of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and Saint Katharine Drexel.
In September 1973, the remains of the those interred at the burial ground at Eden Hall were transferred to Saint Joseph Cemetery, West Roxbury, Suffolk County, Massachusetts.
The boarding school closed in the late 1970s due to financial issues, and the complex fell into disrepair. Most of the buildings were destroyed by a major fire in 1979. The buildings were demolished shortly thereafter.
After the initial closing of the school, Joseph C. Fluehr Sr. protected the property from becoming residential real estate, and the park that the school once stood on has been named Fluehr Park in his memory in 1985; it is currently under jurisdiction of the Fairmount Park Commission.
