Major Joines Cemetery
Whitehead, Alleghany County, North Carolina, USA
Adam Crouse's Grave is located in a cow pasture on what is the old Major Joines Cemetery or Harold Choate Property about 1/2 mile south of Highway 18 in Whitehead, Alleghany Co., NC. It is near the intersection of Airbellows Gap Road and Pineswamp Road. It is not really what one would think of as a cemetery. It appears that most graves have been relocated and his is the only marker with an inscription. Daryl Crouse Could only find two marked graves still there) Cows roam through the cemetery and it is overgrown with polk and other bushes. The tombstone is not the original stone and we feel that the date of birth is not correct. Sparta's local cemetery expert, Len Chapel and Crouse researcher Bonnie Tedder agree with this observation. The tomstone indicates that Adam was born 1752 and the stone was estimated that the Joines stone was erected sometime after 1900. The stone also does not contain a death date. Though many of the graves in this location have been moved, there is a very strong possibility that Adam's wife, Elizabeth is also buried there in an unmarked site. property owner, family member, Michael Choate has indicated to Bonnie Tedder that there are several small stones remaining in the ground which may be additional burial sites. At the times of Darryls visits, the field grass was too high to notice or properly inspect this observation.
