The Cistercian Monks came to New Mellifont, Collon Co. Louth, in 1938, from Mount Melleray Abbey in Cappoquin, County Waterford, at the invitation of Cardinal Mac Rory.
The original Monastery of Mellifont was founded in 1142. It is a short distance from the new foundation. The original site was donated by O'Carroll, Chieftain of Oriel. It was supressed in the reign of Henry the VIII of England.
The current monastery is situated in the village of Collon/Collann between Slane and Ardee on the main N2 to Derry road.
There are two seperate cemeteries, the public cemetery is on the front drive of the monastery overlooking the lake; it is surrounded by a low wall. It contains those who were benefactors of the monastery, or have some other tie to the monastery or the monks.
The private monastic cemetery (monks graveyard) is located behind the actual monastery on grounds within the monastic enclosure. Permission is usually only given to immediate family to visit the monk's graveyard.
