This cemetery is the family cemetery of John Reubin Flanagan and he and his native american wife, Deannah were the first buried there. The cemetery is located on what was his property and is on Flannigan Cove in Bankhead Forest in Lawrence County, Alabama.
PERSONAL NOTES OF HENRY JACK MCDOWELL, first Ranger of Bankhead Forest; as transcribed by Myra Borden; Lawrence Co, Archives before 1990; "Early Settlement in Lawrence Co (Flanagin Creek); p 3; John Flanagin ,one of the pioneers in the county and for whom the creek was named, made a homestead on what is now known as the J.J. Wilkerson place(this may have been the first settlement). Other early families who moved in were: Borden,Goss, Pate, Blankenship, Free, Wilkerson, Walls, Mann,Ulysses and McAfee.Later families (some) who lived on Flanagin Creek were: Spillers, Herndon, Slaton,McDowell, Vines, McCarty, Parker, Austin, Riggs, Garrison, Matthews, Henderson, Castleberry, Whisenant and Richards.
