The northern area was developed later and was used exclusively for Boer P.O.W.s. At the highest point in the cemetery the Boers erected a monument which has the names of all those in the cemetery. The names are numbered and those numbers correlate to numbers on the head stones. Shortly after the end of the war in 1903 the wall that now encloses the entire cemetery was constructed.
