Haw Creek Township, Morgan County, MO
Sec 14, Twp. 42, Range 19
The farm south of Stover, owned by Mollie Shadwick, has an interesting history. Bertha Wilson Wiest was married to Dr. Wiest. Her Grandfather, Robert Adams Wilson, homesteaded the south 160 acres beginning in 1851. He was hanged in 1863 by bushwhackers who thought he might be helping the South cause.
Robert was married to Mary Ann Davis, niece of Confederate President Jefferson Davis. They operated one of the few slave farms in the area.
After Robert's death, his son James and wife Sue, and his mother, Mary Ann, remained on the farm until 1909. In 1890 he added the north 240 acres. They are all three buried in the Stover Cemetery.
Robert is believed to buried in the family plot on the farm. There were 23 graves on the east slope of the field where there was an orchard. It was just to the west of the barn, but most of the grave stones are no longer there. At one time the county road was north of this property, but now is on the south.
Dorothy and Bill Williams went to this cemetery and only found 2 stones and one footstone.
1. Polly Black Wilson Byler whose stone is still readable was married to Wilson before she married Byler. She was born 16 Oct 1792 and died 4 Sep 1851, and is buried on the farm. There was a footstone with the initials P.W.B. that we assumed was Polly's.
