Add PhotosThomas Gary's land bordered to the northwest lands owned by his brother, Charles Gary; the other sides were vacant. This land was located near the line of Laurens and Newberry counties near Kinards, South Carolina.
Thomas Gary, Esq. was mentioned first in South Carolina, 27 Dec. 1754, when he purchased, from John Pitts, 200 acres on Bush River for one hundred fifty pounds.
Thomas Gere had a warrant for 100 acres on Saludy River and Bushy Fork, 6 June 1758; One for 200 acres in Berkley Co. and 88 acres in Berkley Co., 7 Nov. 1758.
Thomas Gary and Charles Gary lived in a small community on Bush River.
John Pearson wrote concerning the Indians: "In short they have burned and destroyed all up Bush River, except Jacob Brooks where there are some people gathered together to stand in their own defense." Those who signed the petition asking relief against the Indian depredations were: Charles and Thomas Gary, date Journal of the Council 1755.
The Gary's settled on the line between Laurens and Newberry counties, from Stub entries to Indents issued in payment of claims against S.C. growing out of the Revolution.
Thomas Gary was granted four indents, probably for three of the name who served or furnished supplies. Thomas Gary for eight pounds nine shillings and eight pence for provisions supplied the Militial in 1782.
Thomas Gary and his wife were among the earliest members of Bush River Baptist Church, however, they are buried in a private cemetery on the original Thomas Gary home place, as recited by the sons, John Newman and Samuel, when they sold the original home place on the line of Laurens and Newberry Co., SC.
