This is a very old cemetery, which appears to have been in use since the 1700's. It is now almost derelict, with only a small number of undamaged headstones.
Its general use was discontinued in the 1930s, and was replaced by the new Cruagh Cemetery, which adjoins, but it has been used for occasional single burials in family plots as late as 1989.
Access to this section is through a small gate at the southern side of the main cemetery.
There is a small stone tower on higher ground in the centre of the cemetery. This is believed to have been built from the stone of an old church, and was created as a watchtower to prevent the activities of the "Resurrectionist Bodysnatchers".
Lewis' Topographical Dictionary of 1837 notes, "the burial ground of an old church, now a ruin, is still much used".
All headstones which were legible have been photographed, and all of those named on a headstone have had a photograph of the headstone added onto their memorial.
Names of those noted on headstone in the "new" cemetery, as buried here in the Old Section, include,
The parents and family of Patrick Boyce.
Margareta Casey, d. 2 Nov. 1918.
John Casey, d. 14 Jan. 1930.
Mary Casey, d. 2 July 1939.
Matthew Kennedy and his wife
Catherine Kennedy
John Kennedy, son of Matthew & Catherine, and his wife Anna Kennedy
No headstone for any of them were found.
