The Auld Kirk of Nairn was built in 1658 on the site of an earlier church and was in use until 1808, when it was discovered that structural faults had appeared in the walls, roof and gallery, prompting a decision by the presbytery to rebuild the church. The church was rebuilt in 1810, foolishly, as it later proved, on the foundation and parts of the walls of the old building. The floor was merely covered with sand and surfaced with clay, and it was not until 1850 that the necessary funds were available to lay a wooden floor and install a heating system. During the late 1880's, several complaints about the lack of ventilation and the prevailing distressing odour were lodged with the Kirk Session, dry-rot being found to be the cause. At about this time the heating system caught fire, and the Session was finally convinced that the church should be abandoned and a new church built on a different site.
