NOTE: Upon transcribing this plot I found only two intact headstones, two broken headstones, and about 17+ fieldstones. Much information was provided by Mr. Donald Shaffer. This cemetery has been undergoing a restoration headed by Mr. Melvin Singer. The following data was also supplied by Mr. Shaffer. This site was the burial ground for the families of Casper Shaffer and Nicholas Varner, two of the earlier settlers of the area. Visitors to the site in the mid-1950's estimated that there were approximately 25 persons buried at this location, although only a couple of headstones remain.
Sometime in the 1950's, there was an article in the local newspaper, where police in neighboring Conemaugh Township found the headstone of Peter Varner in a resident's front lawn. They were seeking information on where the stone was taken from by vandals. One of the broken stones that I found only had part of an inscription: Ag- 68y1m21d. This is most certainly the stone of Peter Varner. According to Mr. Shaffer, one of the fieldstones was marked "N V 1852" and was thought to be the stone of Nicholas Varner. Since then that stone has not been found, but one was found with the inscription of "J V 1852." It is not clear if this is the same stone and was erroneously transcribed previously, or if they are two different stones.
George Shaffer, born circa 1817, died before the 1870 Census. It is very possible that he is also interred in this plot since his wife and daughter is. Nicholas' wife, Barbara, was either a Hildebrand or an Engels. This cemetery is a perfect example of the need to document these transcriptions before the information is lost over time due to the elements, vandalism, neglect, or development in the area. Opon my trip on June 15, 2011, the cemetery is completely overgrown again.
