Sullivan-Ruddick Graveyard
Also known as Ruddick Cemetery , Ruddick Cemetery #2 , Sullivan Cemetery
Ogilville, Bartholomew County, Indiana, USA
After Ruddick's death in 1870, the land returned to Malinda. She died in 1875, and the property went to her son, James R. Sullivan. In 1901, the land was inherited by James R. Sullivan's son, Grant Sullivan. Grant died in 1922. This neighborhood has long been known locally as "Sullivan's Corner."
In 1995, this 40-acre tract was divided into four 10-acre lots, Rustwood Minor Subdivision. The cemetery is near the east end of Lot #1, and is noted on the plat record.
Research has not yet revealed Gemima Hampton's connection (if any) to either the Sullivan or Ruddick families. Jesse Ruddick buried here was Malinda's husband. James Robertson Sullivan was her son. There are at least three other persons connected with this family, whose burial places have never been located: James Sullivan, Sr., born in Ireland, died ca. 1838; William H. Sullivan, son of James and Malinda, died April, 1849; and Malinda (Robertson) Sullivan Ruddick, b. 1810, KY, d. 1875. Rebecca (Conrad) Sullivan, wife of James R. Sullivan, d. Oct. 16, 1933, and was buried at Mt. Healthy cemetery.
Ruddick-Sullivan cemetery is isolated, in deep woods. The dense forest and carpet of creeping myrtle ground cover keep weeds and brush at a minimum. A small remnant of decorative wire fence is the only evidence there was ever an enclosure.
Indiana Cemetery Locations, Volume 2, published by the Indiana Genealogical Society (01 April 2006), gives the primary cemetery name as Ruddick Cemetery #2 with an alternate name of Sullivan Cemetery.
The cemetery is listed in the Cemetery and Burial Grounds Registry of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and in the State Historical Architectural and Archaeological Research Database (SHAARD) with Cemetery Record Number CR-03-154 (Ruddick / Sullivan).
The Indiana Historic Sites and Structures Inventory (IHSSI) survey number for Sullivan Cemetery / Ruddick-Sullivan Cemetery is 005-306-70017 with the dataset compiled in 2012.
