Lower Abbey Farmhouse now occupies the site of Newenham Abbey, and incorporates some of the ruins in the outbuildings. The Cistercian Newenham Abbey was granted land and endowments in 1247, by Reginald de Mohun, Lord of Dunster, who sometimes styled himself Earl of Somerset. The Abbot and nine monks were granted pensions on March 9th 1539, when the Abbey was dissolved. The farmhouse probably incorporates the west range of the abbey. The south wall of the nave, represented by a 40 metre length of walling with two blocked arches, now forms an internal division to the barn. Grass covered mounds of building debris, including fragments of carved stone, remain in the orchard. Excavations on the site of the abbey church have established that the church had at least one aisle. Roman tile was used as hardcore beneath the floor, a possible source of the tile being the earthwork at Woodbury.
