The west gate has stone posts with a plaque which reads: "In memory of the Beloved Dead, They rest in peace, gateway erected in 1945, by the families of Robert Freeborn, Margaret Freeborn, Maria Freeborn" all of whom are buried in the cemetery.
The cemetery lies at the corner of what has been historically a Freeborn farm, although it seems from the beginning to have been a community cemetery. it seems very unlikely that there was any church here. The Freeborn family probably donated the property, and they still use it, as recent burials testify.
Freeborn Gates The cemetery is on a very steep hillside, prompting one of the transcribers to suggest that someone, seeing the need for a community cemetery in the 1840's, at once offered this piece because it was impossible to plough! It would not have been possible for the hearse or any other vehicle to enter at anytime, and both the digging the graves and carrying in the coffins must have been hard work.
