Methodists in the Georgeville area — where Nancy Hoover's family resided — established a Methodist Episcopal Church.
Before the Mauks moved to their new home, Mrs. Mauk passed away in 1849 and was buried in the Georgeville Cemetery.
In 1850, Joseph Mauk married her sister, Mary Hoover, and moved to Canoe Township.
When the Methodist Episcopal church burned in the late 1880s, the congregation decided to rebuild in the town of Richmond (now Rochester Mills) and the land and cemetery
reverted to Joseph Mauk, who had donated it.
Mauk's was the last burial in June 1891.
After the cemetery spent years under extensive brush and debris, three Punxsutawney Area High School students — 2001 graduate Maureen Redding and rising seniors Daniel Maranda and Amanda Rankin — undertook preservation efforts at the cemetery as Senior Projects.
The three students, and nearly 50 other volunteers removed 27 pickup-truck loads of brush and debris from the cemetery over a period of three months.
They found a total of 10 tombstones, including the stone for Joseph Mauk's grave. One stone marked three graves, and two markers designate that Civil War soldiers are
buried there. The earliest burial they discovered was for Elise Nesbitt, who died in 1859 when she was 3 years old.
