In the rear of the Post Office building, at the north east corner of North George Street and East Cottage Avenue, Millersville, is an old graveyard. On the site of the post office there was originally a brick church building erected in 1843 (Ellis and Evans p. 955.) which was used jointly by the Lutheran, Reformed and Moravian congregations. About the year, 1871, the Zion Reformed Church congregation erected a building on the west side of North George Street, which (1942) is still standing, and in the same year St. Paul's Lutheran congregation erected a church on the east side of North George Street, which is standing today (1942). The Moravian congregation ceased to function years ago. Since a number of Lutherans are interred in the old Union Graveyard, St. Paul's Lutheran Church purchased the cemetery, cleared it of weeds and rubbish, and erected an iron fence on the east and south, with an entrance gate in the south side. We visited the graveyard on July 9, 1942, and transcribed the tombstone inscriptions. Two days later, accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. Goodhart, we verified the inscriptions copied on the previous visit. We found the graveyard in excellent condition. It is under the care of St. Paul's Lutheran Church and receives periodical attention. A privet hedge bounds the graveyard on the north and west. At the time of our visit we found 105 head stones in an upright position, 11 were lying under the privet hedge on the north, and 10 foot stones were in their original positions.
The oldest tombstone, with an inscription that could be deciphered was erected to a child, Barbara Bortzfield, who died April 20, 1836.
