Smith-Merritt Family Cemetery
Pridgen, Coffee County, Georgia, USA
This Family burial ground, that was restored in 2001 by Smith family and friends, is recorded in Deed Book A-1, pages 454 and 455 at the Coffee County Court House. Lots 20 and 39 were purchased by A. A. Smith from the Frederick Merritt estate on May 7, 1861. We understand that a Merritt family member or two [or more] had been buried on this lot.
Alfred Able and Tobitha Wooten Smith and 2 of their children, Martha and Floyd are buried here. We were told that at least 2 Merritts are also here, possibly more. To date, four members of the Merritt family have been added. Merritt grave markers can by added by family members, if desired.
There is no public road access to the Smith Family Cemetery.
"Children of Clarence Alfred Smith spent many endless hours compiling the geneology records. Thanks to Clarice Smith Johnson, Pat Smith Hand, Faye Smith Sinclair, Emily Smith Hutto, Rhonda Smith Dunn and Alfred Smith.
Clarence Alfred Smith was the son of Joshua Frier Smith, grandson of Alfred Able Smith and father of Alfred Smith, who was instrumental in making this all possible. Tom Smith, son of Rexford Smith, and Alfred worked tirelessly clearing away underbrush and restoring "The Smith Family Cemetery".
I am sure descendants, Eldridge Rish and Ada Porter took peace to their grave, knowing the final resting place of their grandparents had finally been preserved.
A SPECIAL THANK YOU to any and all other family members and friends that helped in making this dream become a reality. It was a life-long dream of our DADDY, to see this tattered old family cemetery restored. He was smiling down on us, on that beautiful Sunday afternoon, October 7, 2001.
From the Smith Family."
