The Fite Cemetery was a private family cemetery used by the Fite Family, as well as neighboring families from 1844 until the early 1900's. Some of the earliest white settlers to the Resaca area are buried here including Peter and Nancy (Carlock Fite, Mountain Greeson, Sydney and Annie (Thurman) DeFoor and Ruth A. Keene, the wife of James M. Keen. The first Fite family home, a log cabin, once stood across the road from the cemetery and Fites Ferry, operated from the 1840's until about 1930, was located less than a quarter mile from the cemetery.
There are 37 graves with identifiable headstones, there is one foot stone with the initials G. W. J. that doesn't have a corresponding headstone, and there are ten other possible grave sites marked with river rock. This means there at least 48 members of the Fite family and neighbors of the Fite family buried in the Fite Family Cemetery.
Baxter B. Fite III is the unofficial caretaker of the cemetery. He has taken care of the cemetery, as best as possible from over 640 miles away in Peoria, Illinois, since the 1970's. He has published a history of the Fite Family and questions about the cemetery or individuals buried there should be refered to him. He can be contacted at (309) 685-5861.
