Chignik Bay Russian Orthodox Church Cemetery
Chignik, Lake and Peninsula Borough, Alaska, USA
The Chignik Bay Russian Orthodox Cemetery overlooks the community of Chignik Bay and is alongside the west edge of town, just above Indian River. A small stream trickles through the cemetery and then waterfalls into Anchorage Bay. There was a Russian Orthodox Church next to the cemetery, but it has since fall apart and is (as of May 2010) a heap of weathering lumber.
There are several graves in the cemetery, some still with names and recently laid flowers. Some grave markers have weathered in the Chignik weather, aptly named for the fierce winds that blow across this region of the Alaska Peninsula.
The Russian Orthodox Cemetery is at the far west end of Anderson Road, across the bridge, and just beyond the City Building.
If you fly into the Chignik Bay International Airport, it is about 1.5 miles to the Russian Orthodox Cemetery. If you land at the dock where the Alaska Marine Highway ships moor, it is about 3,300 feet.
The grave markers range in elevation from about 50 feet to about 65 feet, although there are a few at higher elevations.
There are three communities with the name of Chignik in the region: Chignik Bay, Chignik Lagoon, and Chignik Lake, sometimes adding to logistical challenges. A request was submitted to www.findagrave.com around May 2010 to add all three communities.
