The township, of Parks, was named for the Parks family who resided there and owned the land that this cemetery was created on. Prior to 1878, the Armstrong County townships of Bethel, Parks and Gilpin did not exist and these locations were incorporated into, what was then known as Allegheny Township. After 1878, this cemetery location was considered in the newly created Park's Township.
Armstrong County was originally created, in 1800, from parts Allegheny, Lycoming and Westmoreland Counties. Two of the original inhabitants, of Armstrong County, were Robert Parks and his wife Jane and they are both buried here in this small Family Farm Cemetery. They were here, on this land, prior to 1800, when this part of the county was still considered a part of Allegheny County and they lived but a few years time, after the formation of the new county, dying in 1816/18.
This cemetery is totally surrounded by private property and although State law prohibits a cemetery from being access restricted, one should first read the no trespassing sign and request permission of the signatory. It is a fair distance from the road to the cemetery and although it is mostly level and on top of the hill, in the summer when the folaige and the corn is grown up it will be a stiff hike indeed.
DRIVING DIRECTIONS: From the bridge, over the Kiskiminetas River, in Leechburg, PA drive SOUTH on Pennsylvania Route 66, along the river and out of town, toward Vandergrift, PA. Drive for a distance of 1.85 miles, from the bridge to the intersection at Airport Road. (This intersection will appear to be a "Y" instead of the usual "T" intersection. Bear left here, onto Airport Road. Drive a total distance of 0.5 miles, from 66, bearing right at the intersection of Hungry Hollow Road, to the top of the hill, on Airport Road. On top of the hill, you will see two large buildings, on your right and these were the old Leechburg Airport hangars. Pull in here, between the two buildings. (Do not block the access gate...move to the next pull in, between the buildings!) Look across the field, slightly to your right, angling your view somewhat, but not quite back down hill. You will see several large Pine/Hemlock Trees sticking up over the surrounding trees, about 200 or 300 yards away and behind two additional buildings. This is where the cemetery is located. Walk the farm access road, which begins, to the right of where you are parking and come to a farm pond; at the farm pond, walk across the dam and jump across the spillway, (about a two foot jump) but only if it is dry. (Otherwise back track and go around the pond the opposite direction) and the cemetery is just up the short incline, from the pond.
