Old Edmiston Burial Grounds
Viney Grove, Washington County, Arkansas, USA
Name of the cemetery should be Edmiston-Taylor Graveyard
This cemetery is nearly destroyed over 150 years of cattle grazing while being unfenced. There are a few tombstones here that can be read. There are assumed to be stones that have been covered by dirt and need to be restored. And there are a pile of gravestones broken into small pieces and lying around the base of a tree in the middle of the cemetery. This cemetery is believed to have the graves of the pioneer EDMISTON family of Moses James Edmiston and wife Mary Ann Thompson, who received the original federal land grant for property adjacent to the 40 acres surrounding the cemetery. The cemetery is actually on land originally patented by Aaron and Agnes Smith in 1838. Surrounding property was also patented by Aaron's son-in-law George Taylor, hence its name Edmiston-Taylor graveyard. The Moses James Edmiston family was one of the earliest pioneer families in Washington County, arriving between 1826 and 1828. The cemetery is in dire need of restoration and fencing.
