Some of the headstone names : Weyl, Blackburn, Pontius, Hoover, McNutt, Bartlett, Rauch, Handman.
Note: The GPS cooridinates are the same for a St John's Cemetery listed at Find A Grave. The only other cemetery in Petersburg is called "Petersburg Cemetery est 1877" on St RT 170 going north just north of Turnpike 76 overpass.
History: The origins of this cemetery are obscure, but it appears to have begun as a family cemetery. Early tax lists of Spfld Twp show the Pontius family paying taxes on land Sec 35 and in the Nw part of Sec 36 where the cemetery lies. The first burial for which there is an extant stone is in 1831 for Mary Ann Pontius, the 22 y/o w/o John Pontius Jr. John Pontius Sr d in 1848 leaving his widow Elizabeth and son John Jr. Elizabeth died in 1863 and John died 1866. All are buried in this cemetery. Marial L Pontius, second wife of John Jr. died in 1893 and is buried in the Petersburg Cemetery (nearby)
