This was the original cemetery for St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, known at that time as "St. John on the Ridge." A wooden church stood at this site from 1822 until it burned down in 1855. After the original church building burned, parishioners built a new church about a mile away on what is now Long Green Pike (St. John the Evangelist Church, 13305 Long Green Pike, Hydes, MD 21082, 410-592-6206). Burials continued at this cemetery up until at least 1890. The new church site also contains a cemetery, and burials there began in 1856, so it seems that the church had two active cemeteries for about 35 years.

As of September 2009, only two carved headstones remain visible, along with a few footstones and a number of graves marked by uncut fieldstones.
