Jerangle Cemetery NSW Australia
ALL SURVIVING headstones have been photographed and placed on Find a Grave as at March 2024.
The descriptions below relate to how the cemetery was found, and its condition as at March 2024
This old, over-grown and remote cemetery is located on Jerangle Cemetery Road in Jerangle. The entrance road is quite misleading as it passes through a farm gate near an abandoned farm house and what appear to be disused farm buildings. The cemetery is very difficult to access, involving driving through paddocks, carefully avoiding flocks of sheep. In winter the steep, muddy, rutted track would probably need a 4WD to access the cemetery.
Near the Church of England Section there is an information board giving the history of the cemeteries of the area. On this board there is an interpretative map which should be rotated 90 degrees to the left as the Catholic Cemetery appears to be at the rear of the C of E Section. However, there is more than 500m difference between the locations of the CofE section and the Catholic section. The Catholic section is currently hidden by large metre high thistles further up the rough track. The last interment was 2022 in the Catholic Section. Clear evidence of many unmarked interments exists with the placement of rocks for head and foot markers. Clumps of non-native vegetation also signal unmarked interments.
Care should be taken when walking around the cemeteries as there are large rabbit and/or wombat holes. Some of the burrows undermine the concrete slabs of some graves.
