Opened in 1912, the two-story Fairview Mausoleum had an exterior of red granite and a floor-to-ceiling white marble interior. It had its own mortuary, crematorium and chapel, four corridors with 200 crypts each, and several columbaria.
By the 1990s The Fairview Mausoleum had fallen into abandonment and disrepair. It was located right next to a large High School, smack in the middle of a residential neighborhood, and it had turned into something close to a classic Halloween Spook House. Fortunately the deceased occupants continued to rest undisturbed while neighborhood kids and vagrants explored and camped out in the sprawling structure that was surrounded by a overgrown stone and wrought iron fence. Eventually the deteriorating situation became known to the local authorities and the remains were were gradually transfered to nearby Graceland and other cemeteries. The very creepy old place was demolished in 1997. A modern fire station was built on part of the site, and a bronze plaque and part of the fence are all that remain to commemorate the Fairview Mausoleum.
The mausoleum is defunct. The final location of the remaining cremains is not known.
