Lovelace-McSwain Cemetery
Also known as McBrayer-Lovelace Cemetery , McSwain-Lovelace Cemetery
Mooresboro, Cleveland County, North Carolina, USA
In 1997, this cemetery was recorded again by Roy Brooks and a note was also entered by surveyor Dennis Morgan.
It was observed that most of the markers were either lying flat or broken. William Floyd had not been to this cemetery. "According to Dennis Morgan it looks like it is completely gone now."
This cemetery was located on what was known as the "Whitaker Farm," on Whitaker Road in the Sandy Run Community. The land was owned by Ed Whitaker and it remained in his family for many years. The land has changed hands several times since the death of Mr. Whitaker. Although the site of the cemetery was enclosed by a barbed wire fence, at some point in time part of the fence fell down and the cattle were allowed to roam free throughout the cemetery. All of the markers were broken and trampled by the cows and someone associated with the care of the land disposed of the broken markers. The location of these markers is unknown to this day. The cemetery has not been used since 1914 and has suffered a great deal of damage and neglect over the years. The burial site may only be approximately 100 ft. long x 100 ft. wide. Veterans from the War of 1812 and the Civil War were also interred here. There is very little hope in locating those broken stones and reconstructing them as they were when they were placed there decades ago. The destruction and desecration of this historical cemetery is complete and can never be replaced.
