This cemetery is extremely remote and is accessible only by foot or 4 wheel drive vehicle. It sits on top of the mountain between Mill Branch and Tolson. The photos show where flowers still bloom and the remains of a wooden Memorial stand can be seen.
John C. Eldridge (1833-1910) and members of his family lived all around the area of the cemetery but no one lives on top of the mountain anymore.
The road from Mill Branch up to the cemetery is privately owned by coal / gas concerns and is marked NO TRESPASSING. However, permission can be attained by talking with the coal company on the Kentucky River at the mouth of Tolson Branch.
My father and I, along with other Eldridge descendants John P. Eldridge, Geneva and Vicki Watkins, placed the Civil War marker at John C. Eldridge's grave in 1991. I wanted to mark this location as permanently as I could for future generations to protect, hopefully, from being destroyed forever.
I visited there the first of April 2009 probably for the last time and wanted to memorialize it as much as I could, also.
