Williams-Goodgame Cemetery is the eighth cemetery in Chilton County to be listed in the Alabama Historic Cemetery Register and the 114th cemetery listed statewide. According to Katherine Reece, who submitted the nomination, the oldest marked grave is that of Nancy Williams who died in August 1863. This cemetery contains the burial of Thomas H. Williams, the first sheriff of Chilton County (then referred to as Baker County). Also buried here is John Crockett Goodgame, who is recorded by some as the nephew of Davy Crockett. The last burial was that of Rebecca Williams who died in October 1929.
The Alabama Historical Commission administers the Alabama Historic Cemetery Program that gives aid to the general public, government officials, civic groups, and others in identifying, documenting, registering, and conserving Alabama's historic cemeteries.
The Historic Cemetery Register Program recognizes and honors those cemeteries that have a significant historical association and were established at least 40 years ago. Listing in the state cemetery register is an honorary designation imposing no restrictions on property owners. To protect, preserve, and interpret Alabama's historic places is the mission of the Alabama Historical Commission, Alabama's state agency for historic preservation.
The Williams Goodgame Cemetery is a historic cemetery in the Jumbo community of northeast Chilton County. Thomas H. Williams was a Lt. in the Confederate States Army. Other veterans in this cemetery are Edward Willis, also in the CSA, and John Crockett Goodgame who served in the Alabama militia during the late Creek war of 1836.
