Starnes Family Cemetery
Van Horn Township, Carroll County, Missouri, USA
The Starnes Family Cemetery is located in Carroll County, MO. Take North 65 Highway from Carrollton for 6 miles, then turn West on state blacktop "W" that leads into Bogard. Once on W, the cemetery is located on the North side, within the first quarter mile, in a present-day cow pasture.
n 2009, it was shared to contributor Loretta (Willis) Rainey-Fones, by an elderly lady of the Bogard community, that back in the 1950's there were approximately 30 or more stones standing, a fence around it, with a large tree nearby. Loretta asked permission to access the cemetery, from the present landowner (in 2009), to go through two gates, and among his cattle to document the only two remaining stones. Those being the face-down shared stone of James and Jane Starnes, and the other stone of their daughter, Sarah (Starnes) Nichols, which had fallen down and was face up. Both stones were broken from their base. With help, Loretta was able to turn the Starnes stone over to read it. The remembered tree and fence were no longer there. Cattle had been in the pasture for many years, and likely why the Starnes and Nichols stone remained, is that they were large in size.
In 2023, it is not known if those two stones are still there. The property has changed hands a couple of times. It would be advisable to ask permission of the present owners, who live on the property, just West of the cemetery, if anyone wishes to access it.
