This first cemetery of the newly founded city of Schöneberg was created in 1883. Its original size was 44.133 m². As the city developed the area of the cemetery became valuable property and the city counsel decided in 1928 to close the cemetery. Their plan was, that after the period of repose had expired, to use the area for urban development. Soon thereafter it became apparent that valuable burial space was wasting away and the decision was reversed and in 1932 the cemetery was re-opened. Nevertheless parts of it had been leveled and a newly constructed inner-city highway literally cut the cemetery's size in half. During the Nazi period more cemetery property was needed for Albert Speer's designs of Hitler's new capital "Germania". So the mass removal of graves began in 1938 and by the end of 1939 almost 2800 graves had been moved to either the Wilmersdorfer Waldfriedhof or the Friedhof Gütersfelde. After the war more areas of the cemetery were lost to urban development, including a newly created park. By 1969 the cemetery shrunk to 18.380 m². In 2006 the city counsel decided to finally close this cemetery for good. There have been no burials since 2006, so that after the period of repose (30 years) has expired, this cemetery will be leveled and used for new housing developments.
