On May 24th, 1851, James and Margaret James deeded a ¼-acre parcel in East Caln Township, near Downingtown, to Joshua Robinson and Thomas Jones of Uwchlan Township, James Williams of West Whiteland, and William Hinson of East Caln Township, trustees of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, for $25, for the erection of a meeting house. A church, named Zion, was erected shortly thereafter. Located as it was near Thomas Downing Lindley's estate of Northwood, it became known as "Lindley Hill" (Northwood Cemetery also took its name from Lindley's estate).
The church thrived for a number of years, but towards the close of the 19th century most of its members had moved into Downingtown. Accordingly, in 1899, the African Methodist Episcopal Church Extension Society established a new church in Downingtown's West Ward, on Prospect Avenue. This church, which would become known as Bethel, would come to be the primary church of the area, and Zion's congregation dwindled.
The church no longer exists, but the cemetery there continued to be used by the Downingtown-area Black community into the 1960s. Today, it borders the Woodmont Condominiums and is in a somewhat neglected state.
