Atkinson Cemetery
Also known as Morris Cemetery , Orr Cemetery , Daffin Cemetery
Rapides Parish, Louisiana, USA
(also known as Atkinson / Orr / Morris Cemetery)
South from Alexandria on US Hwy. 165, turn right at blinking light in Forest Hill (Castor Plunge Road). Turn left on Bayou Clear Road between the Baptist Church and Cemetery. Go 1.9 miles, and cemetery is on the left just past the Assembly of God Campgrounds. A small sign can be seen from the road if the land is cleared. If not, one must search the area for the sign and cemetery, located about .1 miles from the road.
This old abandoned cemetery is at the edge of the trees in the woods, and the tombs have been vandalized in the past. The area is overgrown with large trees and limbs, as if it had not been maintained for 25 years or more. There are many depressions and open holes in the area. Tombstone are located in the woods.
At the time family members died, there was little available for a tombstone, so the family placed some large rocks where their loved ones where buried. Until vandalism a lot of these large rocks have been broken into small pieces and/or removed from the cemetery area. Until a few years ago many stones were still standing.
HISTORY
When William Daniel Daffin originally purchased this land from the Atkinsons, there were two cemeteries in the area - the one which is still visible, and a smaller one that was nearby, but completely separate from the larger one. "Miss Aline," daughter of William Daffin, remembers playing in the area where the two cemeteries are located as they were on her father's land. She was not able to remember the name of this second cemetery, and unfortunately there is nothing remaining of the burial ground today... She did, however, remember the names of some of the people who are buried here, even though she could not remember the dates. History provided by Mrs. Aline Daffin Scarbrock, who was 93 years old in November 1991.
